Fests at the Beach

On the shoulders of the tourist season, in the spring and fall, the locals reclaim the popular beaches.  Both Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach had their celebrations this past weekend.

The Ocean Beach Oktoberfest is the only San Diego Oktober Fest on the beach.  The venue is parking area at the foot of OB Pier, which is the longest concrete pier on the west coast.

When we were in our 30s it was flatering to be carded to enter a Beer Garden, but now as we hit 70 it is insulting.  Fran did not bring her purse and without a photo ID we were turned away.  There is always Hodad’s for a fun time and a great burger.  Yikes Hodad’s is closed!  Peeking thru the window there is not a chair to be seen, a bit shocking at first.  But the fine print says it is closed for 'Repairs and Stuff' and will reopen in a couple days.

Back to South Beach for San Diego’s best fish tacos, the Baja style are on the Happy Hour menu.

Next up is the Pacific Beachfest, which is a bit bigger deal.  With 3 band stages, nearly a mile of vendors, surfing, volleyball and a 5k beach run.  I started on the beach near the surf competition, where the junior longboard action was taking place.  To qualify as a ‘longboard’ the surfboard must extend at least 3’ above the head of the rider.

Want to learn to surf?  The lesson is free today!

The 5k run is along the beach.  The runners like to stay down by the surf line where the sand is firmer.

And there is a lot of volleyball, still quite popular here.  On the outside courts are the 2-man may-bees, these folks are pretty good, call their own fouls and keep their own score.

On center court are the also-rans.  These folks could, and may have, played on the AVP circuit at one time.  They have a ref and score keeper.  Oh and some prize money…

The wanna-bees are 4-man teams with at least one member of the opposite sex, who must handle the ball in any volley.  Back-in-the-day Fran and I would play in this category.

Despite having a food court with lots of vendors, even a fish taco contest, the long line is waiting to be served at Kono’s.  Yes their breakfast is that good, worth the wait.  And then snag a table overlooking the beach.

Beach Yoga?  not my thing … even though the lesson is free today.

The vendor area is along the boardwalk.  This makes the boardwalk more crowded than a holiday weekend.  I decide to watch a bit more of the volleyball and even pass on the 3 stages playing varying styles of music.
