Prayers for Dayton

Dayton has joined 250 other US cities that are suffering from a mass-shooting, THIS year.
Fran and I, along the extended family are all safe, but suffering from this terrible loss to our community.

Kettering has a nice network of bicycle trails.  Trail K-19 is just a block from the house, and can be ridden to The University of Dayton.

Trail K-3 can be picked up a couple blocks away from the house.  K-3 will lead thru the Hills-n-Dales area to the Miami River at the Carillon.  We combined these trails to make a loop, which took us within a couple blocks of the Oregon District.

Our first stop on our ride was the little Farmer’s Market near where we will access the K-3 trail.
.

Here there are more food trucks and craft venders than those displaying local garden vegetables.

From here we picked up trail K-3 which passes thru the parks of Hills-n-Dales.  Here's Fran coming up one fo the 'hills' - she's way ahead of me in the 'dales'.

We took a break at the John Patterson (NCR fame) statue, where Fran adds some dimension to the size.

Across is a good overlook of our favorite local golf course.

Our next stop is the Calvary Cemetery to visit her mother’s grave site.

Apparently the Calvary folks believe in reincarnation.

Their records show mother was born 2 years after she died, noting her age a –1 … Fran stopped in the office and they promise to correct it.

The Carillon is a great place to not just learn of Dayton history, but to view the actual plane the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk.

I blogged the Carillon a couple years ago HERE.  It is indeed a very good history repository.

Just on the outside of the Oregon District we stopped to view a Ford Powersports show, featuring the Mercury Muscle Cars.  It was indeed a fairly small show : )
.

From the Oregon District we pick up trail K-19 at UD.

The trail passes under Patterson Road via a little tunnel.

To reach Patterson Road there is a staircase with a bike track on the left side.  No need to carry the bike up/down the stairs.

Although we had a good day, we awoke to learn that Dayton did not.  Take a moment to honor the victims of El Paso and Dayton.  These two cities represent the 249th and 250th US cities to suffer mass-shootings this year.

But also think if it is really in the best interest of the country to allow weapons of warfare in private hands … and vote accordingly.

Oops - almost forgot to add an Ohio Fun Fact:
Fastoria Ohio is the only American city to be located in 3 counties (Seneca, Hancock and Wood).

    2. It is kinda surprising how many trails are in the area, both bike and hike trails.
Mass-shootings are getting so common that there seems to be a tolerance. I am not a hunter, but if I was to go deer hunting I'd like to think that I'd not need an AK15.

  3. That yellow Mercury Cougar (third one from the front in your photo) looks exactly like the one I had when I lived in Colorado Springs.

  4. It's hard to wrap ones head around these latest tragedies. Nowhere is safe.

Love seeing all the fresh local produce. We haven't had any corn this summer. I only like to purchase it if I know it is local and just picked. Not much corn in the desert! Love when you can bike everywhere.

    1. Unlike to so many places in the midwest Dayton has just one good place for fresh produce. It's an easy ride from the house too :)

  5. I am appalled beyond speech at these senseless shootings.

Bike ride looks great. Wonder if you saw my 1968 Mercury Cyclone Cobra Jet.

    1. There were quite a few Cobras at the show. If your car was there we saw it!
We'll bike there again this weekend for the German Fest.
