Hocking Hills State Park–the last night in Ohio

It’s now time to move along, first my regrets to my coworkers in ROC there will not be a stop this trip … I’ll make it a destination next time through.   I’ve often wanted to see the Hocking Hills State Park area as it’s the backdrop for books and movies and comes as highly recommended stop.

We stayed at Old Man’s Cave Campground which is located in the most famous area at Hocking Hills State Park.  It offers a range of scenic beauty, wildlife, archery and hiking trails - both above and below the gorge.  The campsites are either dry or electric only but well spaced, although not very level.  Water is located throughout the campground, the dump station is near the swimming pool, which also has laundry facilities.

Rose Lake is a short trail from the campground.  The trail head is near the playground, which offers the usual equipment for the kids, but also basketball, horseshoes and volleyball.

The trails are color coded, be sure to print out the maps in color before arriving.  There is no cell service within the park!  The Gorge Overlook Trail is the Red trail which can be combined with Grandma Gatewood Trail (aka Emma Gatewood) (Blue trail) for a 6 mile loop to Cedar Falls.   We did this loop backwards from Old Man’s Cave the Blue trail first.

The hemlock groves are so awesome, clinging to the rocks and each other.

Although it really makes no difference I’d suggest the Red trail first – the opposite direction.  As the climb from the base of the gorge up to the Red trail is a series of stairs via the ‘Long Tunnel’.  The map show the series as 70 + 11 +8 + 57 +24 (100) steps in a series of staircases.

Niagara Falls next …
