Bike Mission Bay - for library access

Our local library is a block away, but this March it will have been CovidClosed for 3 years!

Baypark library remains closed

The book return has reopened and the there’s fresh paint on the building.  Maybe it will reopen soon.

But the Pacific Beach branch is open!  So we a place a book we want on hold online, and bike ride to PB.  We enjoy this ride in a counter clockwise direction.

Crown Point

With a stop at the Earl and Birdie Taylor Library on Reed Street.  That’s not a play on words read vs. reed, as Reed Street was there when this building was an elementary school.

It may seem backwards, as we start the ride opposite the water on the 'Bay Side', but on the 'Ocean Side' the water is up close.

Mission Boulevard bisects Mission Beach.  We cross it at Santa Clara Place to Ocean Front Walk.

When Fran first moved to San Diego she had a studio apartment on San Juan Place.

  

All the streets that cross Mission Blvd are either called ‘Place’ or ‘Court’.

A bit of trivia ... All the ‘Place’ streets are named after California Missions, a ‘place of worship’.  All the streets with ‘Court’ names are named after beaches, a place for a ‘volleyball court’.

Appropriate names for the Mission Beach community.

Ocean Front Walk  ends at the Entrance Channel to Mission Bay.

Here we cross back to the bay side at Mission Point Park.  Water sports again on the right side, play grounds on the left.

At this point we have to take West Mission Bay Drive to cross the bridge to Quivira Basin.  Our ride is now 12 miles or 3/4 complete and we’re here for lunch.

In Quivira Basin there’s 3 choices for grilled fish tacos:

1.  Sportsman's Seafoods
OK, we have not yet stopped here as their only grilled fish taco is with Ahi, not Fran’s favorite.

They also have a seafood market.

2. Royal Rooster

Grilled Mahi or Grilled Rockfish at $8, it's not cheap, but so good with the spicy red sauce

There is a large menu

and a nice selection of beers

Don’t order wine, your choices are only ‘house red’ or house white’ …  and the red is served chilled!  Never again!

It's common to find moms'n'tots sitting on the grass here, also enjoying the marina.

3.  Aquarius

Aquarius has a full bar

and decent draft beer selection

The seating is kinda lame.  Basically picnic tables in the parking lot.

But it has daily live music and a Happy Hour that starts at 11 am!

And grilled Mahi tacos are 2 for $7! after 11 am.  Tacos are served with a good mango salsa.

Aquarius bills itself as ‘Fun vibes on the Jetty’.  Well the Jetty is 100 yards away.  But for cost alone it's Jeff approved!

Encinitas - Vegan popup

Although the Encinitas Vegan Pop Up is on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.  Today was February 19th, which launches their first festival of the year.

So today we are off to Encinitas.

Where we want to check out the Vegan Pop Up and find something for lunch.

33 food vendors and 17 merchandise vendors!  So many choices!   And all I want is something for lunch.

A vegan sushi burrito? No thanks! A non-vegan sushi burrito? No Thanks!

Feed Your Soul had a tempting ‘Spicy Chik’n Sandwich’, but at $14 too expensive, I might have to toss it :)

Ah Cuban!  I like their sandwiches, but can’t pronounce anything on their vegan menu!

Free samples offered here.  I opted for the mushroom bits with serrano chili, Fran tried the lentils.

Both were OK, but I'd not want a whole bowl of either.

Now the pizza looked really good!  But bear in mind that this is plant based peperoni, plant based sausage and plant based cheese … Too many unknowns for me!

This was like the buffet … Pick your plant, then add it to another plant ...  Don’t get it, but ‘Plant-based meats' had the longest line!

I'm getting hungry by now and curry is tempting.  We both like curry, but vegan curry ‘chick'n’ wings ???

Nope!

So what did I have for lunch?  A Fysh Taco, of course!

SeaCo was voted ‘best of’ in 2019 and 2021.

It was good!  But I just ordered just one fysh taco for $7, should have gotten 2 for $13.

OK so I did add Chalupa sauce :) - it wasn't needed.

Fran chose the stir-fry rice noodles.  Not sure the oil used, but they sure glistened in the February sun. 

I win!  and Fran agrees.  She also liked her bite my 'fysh' taco.  But  I had to cover my mouth to keep from spitting out my bite of her noodles!

It was a fun and different day for us, hope you had a good one too!

De Anza Cove - Progress of sorts

After years of delays some progress is being made in the revitalization of northeast corner of San Diego’s Mission Bay; the city released their new brief on DeAnza Cove.

Although not what we residents voted and taxed ourselves for, at least it is finally movement. 

First le me try to explain the city’s decision as I understand it.  And I think the graphic is deliberately vague and fuzzy :)

The existing marsh wetlands are in dark olive-green.  The light olive-green will be additions to the wetlands.

The beige shows Campland on the Bay, Rose Creek and much of existing De Anza Cove incorporated into sage/grassland buffer zones.

Pink will become ‘guest parking’, that is the political correct way of saying the RV Campground.

Light-green will be an executive 9-hole golf course.  The existing 18-hole course will be expanded to three 9-hole courses.

The current marina and basketball courts will be deleted.

The dark green is everything else, including the new tennis courts - don’t talk to Fran about that!

Construction is nearly complete on a “Adult Fitness Course”. 

Please! enjoy this fitness addition as us locals are paying $8.4 million for it!

Those majestic Mexican palms are not native to san Diego and are slated to be removed :(

As I bike around the redevelopment zone there are now numerous markings where various projects will be done.

The Mike Gotch multiuse pedestrian bridge will remain, regardless of the rerouting of Rose Creek.

Rose Creek will not be the same when the Campland and the moorings are removed.  It might even be a better view.

The osprey don’t seem to care, as another nest has been built in the lights over the Mission Bay High football field.  Look close as mother is sitting on what will be this spring's hatchlings.

I’ve mentioned before that Campland is good at landscaping.  When Fran and I lived in De Anza our lot was there.  It became so overgrown it was not visible from the footbridge. 

Glad to see that a buyer thought it was worth saving, no idea where it was moved.

The new RV park will have a community center and swimming pool.

The RV park is full during a weekday.  A bit of a surprise.  We’re having our house fumigated for termites and there’s no space for us here, in fact no space in the area!  We need to be available, but out of the house for 3 days.

So I came up with this post for the windshield of the RV.

Think it will work?  

Looking across Rose Creek at Campland on the Bay.  This will all become marshland.

The condos will stay, but the marina will be gone.  The area in front of the condos will also become marshland.

The marshland will extend to Crown Point.  But there really isn’t much in this section of waterfront anyway.

I’m sure I mentioned the great job of landscaping being done by Campland at the Mission Bay RV Park.  Here’s an example as I leave the RV park.

The Mission Bay Beach Club is a great addition, but has yet to open the restaurant.

and the Superbloom  coffee continues to do a steady business.

Along this section of Mission Bay much of the 8’ multi-use boardwalk is being replaced/updated

The reduction of the boardwalk from 8’ to 4’ makes a challenge for riding a bike.  So I ride on the grass, although the city would prefer I didn’t  :)

Palm Tree Island off Fiesta Island looked especially nice this morning.
