The Beauvoir mansion, located on the Gulf of Mexico in Biloxi, was the last home of Jefferson Davis and his family. Jefferson Davis was the only president of the Confederate States of America. After the end of the Civil War citizenship was granted to all citizens of south, except Jefferson Davis. Despite he was not in favor of succession and served as the US Secretary of War - he died a ‘man without a country’.
Heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina it remains open to the public with the critical repairs completed.
Beauvoir faces the Gulf with extensive gardens surrounding the property.
In 1903 the property became the Confederates Veterans Home and is home to the Confederate Veteran’s Cemetery, including the tomb of the Unknown Confederate Solider.
I do not know if the camel at Beauvoir is related to the 33 camels Jefferson Davis arranged to be brought to the US. But along with the horses and goats it has the run of the back of the property.
At last a chance to have a Po-Boy while overlooking the white sand beach of Biloxi. And try the fish taco, with a huge filet of catfish.
