The week started just fine. I collected the last harvest of the Macadamia Nuts.

Then the fun part of shelling, while sitting outside on a nice sunny day.

Fran quickly turned some into a yummy Macadamia Nut cake.

Since the oven was already hot, Fran also used up the last of our loquats to make a yummy crumble.

Saturday was another beautiful day. We decided to ride our bikes from Liberty Station to Lane Field for the weekend market.

The market takes place every weekend and is basically a food truck gathering:

We enjoyed the music and selected teriyaki shrimp to share across the street on the Malecon.
And that's when the phone rang…
Fran’s brother Bobby fell, the clinic in San Felipe diagnosed a broken hip.
Medicare insurance is not valid outside of the US, he was transported by Red Cross ambulance to a hospital in Calexico ... You can bet that was expensive!
And then on to San Diego’s UC Medical Center in Hillcrest.

From the staff in the ICU we learned it was a fractured femur not a broken hip. They placed and secured a rod that evening.

Looks like he’ll be our house guest for a few days starting tomorrow.
Fran's sister had this same surgery last month, giving us a idea what the recovery will be like.
The macadamia nut cake sounds delicious…a broken femur not so fun! I am glad it is not his hip and send thoughts for a speedy recovery.

ReplyDeleteIt's a bit time consuming to shell the nuts, but a few cakes are worth it. And yes they are yummy, maybe I'll try making the turtles again.

ReplyDeleteSome insurance will reimburse for injuries in Mexico or Canada, but the initial expense is still the your own. But Medicare is only valid in the US.
DeleteI'm always impressed that you have a macadamia nut tree! All the work looks delicious. Oh man health issues out of the country :-( Glad he was able to get back to you guys safely and get the surgery he needed.
ReplyDeleteHi Jodee - It is a fun tree to have when the nuts are ready gut it sheds leaves all year so it's kinda messy. Good to have Bobby here, vice Mexico as he remains in the hospital and his insurance covers it all.

Jeff and Fran, the news about Fran's brother is at first worrisom but it sounds OK now in the US. Given our mutual health issues, it is nice that he has family nearby for assistance. As for your travels to Liberty station, you mentioned going to Lane Field. My Dad took my brother and I to Lane Field for PCL baseball. This was back when the tuna canneries were working 24/7 and the aroma was memorable especially in the 7th inning stretch. It was replaced by Westgate Park where Fashion Valley Mall is now. Where did you find the park, along the Embarcadero?

Hey Doug - The old PCL Lane Field is basically Waterfront Park i think Broadway and Harbor would be the southwest corner. Makes for a nice bike ride.

ReplyDeleteIt's not been an speedy recovery, for sure! After 10 days at UC Medical he was taken to Kearny for physical therapy. Hopefully he'll be here with us next week. ARG!
