Veggies in Dayton – where’s the greens?

I’m always surprised at the lack of fresh vegetable stands and Farmer’s Markets in the Miami Valley around Dayton.  There are a few, even a local Saturday market nearby, but not the endless selections we’ve encountered elsewhere. We were amazed at the seemingly endless markets in New York.

Our local farmer’s market is truly a local ‘urban’ market.  Just a few booths with backyard veggies for sale.  Walking through this morning I spotted new-to-me a ‘Candy Onion’.  I had to buy one just to check it out!

I tried a candy onion  taste test with a burger.  I think it’s just another sweet onion variety.

The best place for a variety of fresh vegetables is Dorothy Lane Market.   If it grows they may have it and it’ll be fresh.  There is a section just for local grown (commercial farm) and home grown (private farm).
   .

Their produce section has a large variety of the common fruits and vegetables
   .
   .

a large organic selection with ‘50+ organic items every day’

Their fruit selection consists of packaged or bulk selections
   .
   .

I have not seen local bulk mushrooms in any other store.

The salad bar has a rotating selections of complete salads, such as wedge, Caesar, Greek, fruit, etc. or build your own with fresh lettuce, spinach and a huge selection of toppings.
.

We’ve made many trips to the salad bar, taking home nearly 9 lbs for our lunches. The exotic section includes Thai eggplant, Chinese long beans and both red and yellow dragon fruit.

Chilled it has the flavor of vanilla ice cream. Perhaps Dorothy Lane Market explains the lack of the open farmer's market options. Oh, I should also mention they have a pretty decent wine selection

They also have a rotating section of fun and unique items near the check stands, today it had Just Craft Soda.  A habanero soda?

Today’s Ohio Fun Fact:
The Ohio state flag is the only non-rectangular sate flag.  The symmetry of the flag allows it to be flown or hung in any position without loss of legibility.

    1. Dorothy Lane Market is a nice market. I have to wonder if there a few Farmer's Markets because DLM exists or if it exists because there are so few alternatives.

    1. It could well be my favorite market. There's a selection of daily soups too! I had to try the chipotle black bean and stuffed bell pepper, both very good.

  3. All that fresh food plus organics looks so wonderful from a place where it's not available. Midwest tomatoes are the most flavorful.

    1. You are so right! Tomatoes fresh off the vine are always better than the average store bought.
