The state Virginia state slogan “Virginia is for Lovers”. But it’s also for travelers and history buffs.
We left West Virginia and settled in Front Royal, the northern entrance to the 105 mile Skyline Drive
The speed limit on Skyline Drive is 35mph, it’s only a 3 hour drive … Right??? But with 75 Overlooks, hiking and picnicking areas, we took closer to 3 days!
The drive is north/South through Shenandoah National Park. Entrance is free with our Forever Young Pass, also for Veterans and other recognized passes.
Looking back over my photos I think we stopped at all 75 Overlooks.
The day started with a haze, making the light a bit flat. But the views remained awesome.
.There is a tunnel at mile 32 which is 12’8 at the edge.

The haze cleared as we continued along the scenic winding roads.
The cloud cover broke into large cumulus patches.
We settled in for the night at Big Meadows Campground about the halfway point,
It rained most of the night as the clouds settled into the valleys.
.Skyline Drive south entrance is at Rockfish Gap, which is also the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Again do your own research on the tunnel heights, the lowest is in South Carolina and only 11’7” at the edge.
There are certainly view points on the Parkway, but there is also more history than on Skyline Drive.
A short hike leads to the ‘falls’ at Otter Lake. It’s a very pleasant spillway at the dam.
Stepping stones below the falls continue the trail along Otter Creek.
The James River Bridge carries auto traffic, with a lower section for foot traffic.

The foot bridge leads to a restored lock allowing water traffic to circumvent the rapids.

The Great Valley is bounded east and west by the Blue Ridge and the Alleghenies and extends from New York to Alabama.
The Mabry Mill is certainly worth a stop and walk about.
There is several preserved pieces of pioneer equipment and construction on display.
.And of course they need to be self sufficient.

We stopped at the Blue Ridge Music Center. It’s purpose is to maintain and preserve the history of Mountain Music.
.We lucked out and were able to enjoy a concert
More of a jam session then a concert. But lots of fun!
Along the way Rufus had a milestone!
We left the Parkway at North Carolina, with no destination in mind. But the rains hit and we took what was available.
There was a concert scheduled at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. But at least a grass space was available.
And it was FHU!
Guess we were desperate :)
Where to next? Stay tuned!
We drove by the exit for Skyline Dr when we were traveling from PA to FL. I was tempted to take it, but knowing nothing about it, we kept on a truck'in. Maybe next time as it looks like there is a lot to see!
ReplyDeleteSkyline Drive certainly has a lot to see and the Parkway has more of the mountain history. I'm glad we had the time to all of Drive and the North Section of the Parkway.
DeleteThe Skyline & Parkway are old stomping grounds for Joe & me. Enjoyed the Harley on those twisting roads & stopped for the “concerts” several times. Such a beautiful part of our country. And thank you for the trip down memory lane!
ReplyDeleteHi Gay !!! and Joe ! - My previous reply did not post ... grrr
DeleteSo glad we could make new memories while sharing your memories. The Blue Ridge really shows off the history of the mountains and life on it, preserving the music of the era.
Altho early in the season, we encountered many enjoying the twist and turns in groups and a fun single gal riding on her way from Vermont for school in Durham!
Another place we're hoping to get back to see more of! I love 3 hour drives that take 3 days - the only way to travel for us :-) Thanks for sharing. LOL at the FHU site - at least it worked.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a special area and now protected. We will add another section of the Parkway on a future trip. You're right at least the site electricity worked, and that is all we needed.
DeleteMemory Lane for us too! One of our first Beluga trips as a matter of fact! It's a perfect drive to slow life down and just enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI hope those green stepping stones that Fran was standing on weren't green from algae - experience tells me they can be so slippery!
Glad it was Dave driving Beluga ! There's some pretty skinny spots up there! We're skinny and still I had white knuckles in some spots. A shout out to Dave!
DeleteFran did not slip, but also did not go all the way across ... tey were slippery!
Your pics and commentary brings us along for the ride! Thanks. I would be worried that the tunnels are not bright enough. The waterfall over the stair-step stones doesn't even look real! I bet that area is spectacular with the fall colors. Your RV milestone is also YOUR milestone...
ReplyDeleteI too bet the fall colors would be spectacular! With your interest in history and hiking you and Oliver would enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway.
